  • Member of the Month, Member Spotlight, New York

Congratulations Joan! Your hard work and commitment to EPIC has not gone unnoticed. Each month, we recognize a member for what they put in, and this month, you have been chosen! We would like to brag about you in our newsletter and on social media so if you would please fill out the questions below that would help us to do so!

Your Name

Joan H.

I have been an EPIC Member Since

June 2014

EPIC Fun Fact

This can be anything about yourself or an EPIC memory from your time at the gym. Play any sports? Have any interesting hobbies. etc.

Maybe more gross than fun – but I’ve lost my big toe nail more times than I can count!

My favorite EPIC class is

Training Runs

Give us a quick background on yourself.

Born and bred native New Yorker who spent 5 years living in Hong Kong not very long ago. When I’m not enjoying time with my family (I’m one of four sisters!) or EPIC fitness, I’m a commercial litigator, focused on a white collar criminal defense and securities litigation practice. I’ve been to over 20 countries to date, and can’t wait to hit 30!

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

Hard to say the biggest, but I’m always amazed with how many things I couldn’t do that I CAN do now: kick-up handstand, full release re-grips, traversing monkey bars, single arm hang, ring traverse, wall traverse, 36″ box jump (barely), full proper push-ups, double-under jump rope, PULL UPS!!!, rings skin the cat, surviving an EPIC Training Run… and so on!

EPIC Fun Fact

This can be anything about yourself or an EPIC memory from your time at the gym. Play any sports? Have any interesting hobbies. etc.

After enduring a grueling winter studying for the bar exam a group of friends and I decided to join EPIC. After our first class (Friday, Dynamic Core with Sarah) we were all so sore for the remainder of the weekend! But that didn’t stop us from showing up that following Monday!

My favorite EPIC class is

Dynamic Core

Give us a quick background on yourself.

Native New Yorker just relocated back home from 10 years in the frozen tundra that is Minnesota. Recently passed the NY Bar Exam, gearing up to practice so watch out! What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?
Consistency. I’ve tried many an exercise regimen, however since joining EPIC this is the longest I’ve ever maintained a continuous presence. The diversity in the programming and the excellent staff makes it easy!

Keep on being EPIC!

Why Barefoot Training?

Why Barefoot Training?

Ippolita di Paola, Coach, EPIC Interval Training

Ever wonder why we train barefoot at EPIC? Sure it’s convenient to not have to carry sneakers to work each day. But It’s actually because barefoot training improves your balance, alignment, agility, power, and explosiveness. Active, agile, strong humans weren’t meant to be stuck in shoes all day. Shoes and orthotics have become both a crutch for our weak ankles and flat feet, and a cause of restrictions in our mobility and limits on our strength, putting unnecessary compensatory pressure on the knees, hips, low back, and neck.

If you don’t think the feet are that important, take a second to consider that they carry most of your body weight around all day, everyday, not to mention that the foot and ankle consist of 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 16 muscles, and are covered in proprioceptors–”sensors that provide information about joint angle, muscle length, and muscle tension,…integrated to [provide the brain with] information about the position of the limb in space.” Most movement starts with the neural firing from your feet, so just imagine how much better your kinetic chain of movement will operate if the first signal is clear and strong.

What this means for you–the everyday athlete, the weekend warrior, the fitness newbie, the runner, and the strength addict–is you can finally conquer new goals. As coaches at EPIC Interval Training, we strive to aid you in a journey of constant improvement; to be faster, stronger, and healthier. With barefoot training, you can reach new depth in your squat by improving your ankle mobility and driving properly through your heel; you can perfect your deadlift by corkscrewing your feet into the ground, spiraling your knees out and activating your glutes so that next heavy lift is free of back pain; you can drive your force into the floor for that ballistic, rock solid kettlebell swing; you can explode up off the ground and land softly, rolling through your full foot on a box jump; your newfound balance in a lunge, and quickness on an agility ladder will surprise you! And best yet, your coaches can tell when you’re compensating in your movements, and compromising your form, because we can see when your toes are lifting in your kettlebell swing or your heel is striking on a box jump, allowing us to push your progress in a smart way!

So if you want to improve your speed, agility, explosiveness, power, and strength, all while improving your joint health, muscular alignment, shock absorption, mobility and movement mechanics, keep showing up and kicking ass barefoot while us coaches perfect your form, and push your skills and endurance!

EPIC Fun Fact

My Uncle Peter peer-pressured me at the Christmas dinner table to join Epic’s New Year’s challenge without ever have taken a class. I showed up for my 1st class, completed the challenge and haven’t looked back! Thanks Uncle Pete!

Give us a quick background on yourself.

I live on the Upper East Side and work in Midtown at a law firm as the Recruiting Manager. I ran the Chicago marathon last year, love spending weekends at the beach and am the proud Aunt of 3 nephews and 2 nieces.

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

I have had so many…adding weight to my Turkish get-up, finally jumping over the box, and holding crow pose. I am still working on my traverse…!

Mandee Barreto’s EPIC Transformation

Mandee Barreto’s EPIC Transformation

  • epicfresno

  • EPIC Transformation, Member Posts, Member Spotlight, New York

EPIC NYC’s Mandee Barreto, has been a member since 2014. Over the last two years, she’s made strides in both her physical and nutritional well-being. Read about what Mandee has to say about her EPIC transformation.

  • High school went a little something like this…
  • Awkward teenager. Check!
  • Carrying a few extra pounds. Check!
  • Insecure. Check!

In the grand scheme of things, I didn’t really know where I fit in. I was surrounded by the idea that skinny was the thing to be and I just wasn’t. I blamed genetics and, as ashamed as I am to say, I blamed my parents. I had the typical teenage mentality; everyone was out to get me, and because of my insecurities I felt like no one found me attractive, so I buried myself in my books.

I spent so much time and energy not liking the person staring back at me in the mirror during high school, once college rolled around my eating habits began to change and I utilized the campus gym. I always wanted to join a gym, but up until then I didn’t have the money and most places required you to be at least 18. I lost a handful of pounds without too much effort and found a love for working out. I eventually joined a gym and started reading articles on different exercises and nutrition. I didn’t want to be skinny. I wanted muscles. Muscles were sexy.
The gym and I had a very on and off relationship. I got bored easily and I didn’t always like the facilities I belonged to. I even worked as a personal trainer for a month while working toward my certification, but I disliked the place so much that I gave up on it. I endured catcalls as I walked through the weight area. Too many times men felt the need to instill their knowledge upon me. It felt like a man’s world, and I was just visiting.
From that point on I tried group fitness classes. I loved the atmosphere. I walk in for an hour long workout and everything is already planned out for me. I dabbled in just about everything from Zumba to kickboxing, to hot yoga, Pilates and krav maga. It was nice at first, but in many cases, the challenge was lost and became too repetitive to hold my interest. I went back to the big box gym one more time and quickly realized that I was paying for a space that was too overcrowded and I wasn’t getting what I wanted out of the experience. So while browsing through Groupon one day, I saw a deal for EPIC. It was described as a “monkey bar” gym. I was intrigued.
I remember walking in on a Friday afternoon to try my first class, and was quickly greeted by Coach Brendan. Since I was new, he wanted to introduce himself and find out if I had any injuries. All of that individual attention shocked me. Usually the classes I attended were so impersonal, but Brendan knew each participant by name. So refreshing!
EPIC was unlike anything I had ever done before. Each station was based upon functional movement. Awesome! sThe class had a good amount of women in it and they were doing extraordinary things. This definitely wasn’t a boys club (another plus). Men and women had a mutual respect for each other and were able to do amazing things like handstands, skin the cats, rope climbs and more! While I didn’t see myself ever completing any of those feats, I still wanted to stick around and play with the cool kids and I’m glad I did. The class kicked my butt! I was aching all over for an entire week. Muscles that I didn’t even know existed were crying. I couldn’t wait to go back! That was just over 2 years ago J

At EPIC, everyone is friendly and supportive. I found myself celebrating their accomplishments and they celebrated mine. It felt good. This was the most consistent I had ever remained with working out, especially at one place. As my confidence grew so did my strength. I started getting daring and one day as I sat by my computer I signed myself up for a whole trifecta with the first race being a Beast! What a wakeup call! That race was probably physically and mentally the toughest thing I had ever done in my life. When I crossed that finish line, emotions washed over me and tears rolled down my cheeks. I was so happy and so proud. This had happened to me only once before, a month prior when I crossed the finish line of the NYC Half Marathon. Checking the Half off of my bucket list, I found myself hooked on Obstacle Course Racing. Before joining EPIC, I had maybe 2 5Ks under my belt. Since joining, I’ve run countless 5Ks, the NYC Half, The Viking Obstacle Race, and next month I will be running my 6th Spartan (and I’m sure that number will quickly climb).

Now that EPIC was building muscles in just about every inch of my body, I knew it was just a matter of tweaking my nutrition. Working out and proper nutrition clearly went hand-in-hand. The better I fueled my body, the better it performed. The fat slowly melted off and those muscles crept out of their hiding places. Abs! I could see my abs…..Genetics? Ha! I learned that sticking with EPIC a few times a week paired with good nutrition was my secret weapon. Today, I am doing handstands, skin the cats, rope climbs, traversing monkey bars and so much more! I am truly grateful to the coaches and members that have, and continue to inspire me each and every day. I have come into my own and I no longer feel awkward, uncomfortable, or out of place. Skinny is a dirty word to me. I like the person staring back at me in the mirror. I could walk into a gym at any given moment and claim my territory at the squat rack because I am strong, I am fierce, I am confident. I am EPIC.

Deb Northup is a member at EPIC Providence and also won their New Years Challenge. She may look sweet and innocent, but she is a force to be reckoned with. She’s shown just how tough she is and is now racing with the EPIC Providence team. Be sure to push her if you’re working out in Providence. But be careful, she may be lapping you! Get to know Deb and comment below to show her more support. Share her story for motivation to others, as she’s proven there’s no such thing as “can’t”.

When did you first become a member at EPIC?

I joined Epic in the middle of December 2015.

What made you want try EPIC?

I had attended the Badass Challenge and the hikes at Wachusetts with Dan (my son). Everyone involved was friendly and supportive of each other and they were having fun while working out. It made me want to try it.

What were your goals when you started? Have you reached them? If so, have you set further expectations for yourself?

My immediate goal when I joined was not to die or throw up in front of these people who were young enough to be my kids! My goal in joining was to be stronger so that my horseback riding would improve and to give myself something physical to do during the winter.

I am pleased to say that I far exceeded my expectations. I had never worked out or been athletic in my life. I found exercise boring. There is nothing boring about working out at EPIC!! I lost weight and went from a size 12 pant to a size 6 without getting sickly skinny. I have muscles! I have lost back fat and for women, as you age, that is so hard to do.

You won the EPIC Providence New Years Challenge! What/who helped push you to work so hard through those 45 days?

My son is a huge source of my motivation. He is always encouraging me to push myself out of my comfort zone. Everyday during the challenge the men and women at EPIC and the coaches were positive, encouraging, generous and helpful. Working out with such an incredible group of people inspired me to keep at it even when I was tired.

Anything else you’d like to say about EPIC?

It certainly changed my life. I wish all women my age would give it a try. It makes you realize that you can do just about anything no matter your age.
