Why Do We Exercise Barefoot?

Why Do We Exercise Barefoot?

  • December 18, 2017

  • #IntervalTraining

If you were to ask someone if they would ever train barefoot, they would likely look at you as if you were half mad. The only time people deem barefoot training appropriate is when at the beach or performing yoga. Other than that, it seems like some sort of archaic training method, and although true, not all new things are necessarily better. Join us as we delve into the benefits of barefoot training and how exercising in shoes is not as efficient as you may believe.

DRAWBACKS OF TRAINING IN SHOES

Training barefoot was once the ideal way of maximizing results. The trend shifted when shoe companies began switching their focus from constructing minimalist-style footwear to shoes intended to provide ultimate cushioning and comfort. Although the footwear assisted in making activities such as running and traditional gym training more comfortable, it presented more drawbacks than many noticed. Training in shoes:

  • Limits your ability to strengthen leg and foot muscles.
  • Is counterproductive for those who wish to improve stability and balance.
  • Contributes to foot and ankle dysfunction.
  • Inhibits hip and lower torso mechanics.

The disadvantage of training in shoes is much more than having weak ankles or instability. Foot and ankle stability is integral to perform many exercises and can be the reason behind your inability to do them correctly or without discomfort. By strengthening your body from the ground up, you build a foundation that is conducive to efficient training.

BAREFOOT TRAINING EXPLAINED

After adequate preparation, working out barefoot can increase overall strength, promote proper firing patterns and foot mechanics. Many people fail to realize that roughly 20% of the muscles in the body are in their feet and ankles. This is so as they are meant to absorb an excessively high amount of force.

By training barefoot, we allow those muscles to strengthen and improve our ability to perform many compound exercises like:

  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Jump squats
  • Box jumps
  • Step-ups

You’ll quickly realize after regularly training barefoot that your ability to perform many movements with shoes has improved. The reason being is that your tendons, ligaments, joints, and surrounding tissues are no longer responsible for absorbing massive amounts of force. Your body now trusts your feet and ankles more, allowing you to maximize output for all physical activities.

We understand that the fear of injury looms large in the minds of many barefoot training newcomers, which is why we design our fitness studios with your safety in mind. Our mats, walls, and plyo boxes are all made from soft materials to allow you to regain foot and ankle strength in the safest environment possible. Interested in being a part of an EPIC workout? 4 WAYS TO SURVIVE A DYNAMIC WORKOUT

4 WAYS TO SURVIVE A DYNAMIC WORKOUT

  • #IntervalTraining

Have you heard the news? EPIC Interval Training is regarded as one of the toughest variations of HIIT and for a good reason. Our workouts are designed to push your mental and physical limits to help you develop the physique you’ve dreamed of, but getting there is no walk in the park. For those contemplating trying this unique method of fitness for the first time, you may be wondering how in the world you can prepare for such a grueling experience. Here are four ways to help you survive the toughest workout of your life.

HYDRATE YOUR BODY

It’s essential to hydrate your body in the days prior to any workout, but the importance is magnified when the training in question can burn up to 1,200 calories in 45 minutes. With an immense level of energy exertion expected, you can best prepare yourself by drinking water daily leading up to the class. If you fail to do so, your body may become dehydrated quickly during the workout and lead to:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Increased heart rate
  • Limited sweat production
  • Excessive thirst
  • Muscle cramping

STRETCH

Another thing to do in preparation for your EPIC workout is to stretch. Doing so helps loosen the muscles and adequately preps for the wide variations of movements you’ll perform during the session. Our circuit style training is designed to work every muscle for a highly efficient full-body workout. You can expect to do everything from incline push-ups and kettlebell swings to box jumps and sandbag squats. By hydrating and loosening your muscles, you can avoid injury and get the most from your workout. Just be sure to stretch after warming up for the best results as the increased blood flow improves flexibility.

TRY YOUR HARDEST

The toughest battle you’ll fight prior to the training will not be physical, but moreso mental. Many people begin to psych themselves out of being able to do it before even walking through the gym doors. If you go in believing that you can’t do it, then you most likely won’t. Get in the proper mindset by encouraging yourself to perform every movement to the best of your ability, and you’ll likely gain a more beneficial training experience.

SEE IT THROUGH

Don’t give up! Again, your mindset is crucial to the result of this class. You registered for the program because you heard about its many benefits and wanted to experience them first-hand. Now that you’ve made it past the tough part of deciding to enroll, make the most of it by seeing it through to the end. The best thing about HIIT is that your body gradually adapts to the training. Commit to the training, and you’ll see the results.

EPIC Interval Training is here to bring the fun back into fitness by implementing different workouts every day of the week. Through the combination of HIIT and minimalistic training, our circuit-style classes can help you develop strength, endurance, power, agility, and balance in just 45 minutes a day! Contact us today to sign up for an EPIC workout in New York City!

Best Workout Attire for an EPIC Workout

Best Workout Attire for an EPIC Workout

  • epicfresno
  • December 4, 2017

  • #IntervalTraining

When preparing to go to the gym, many people just throw on an old t-shirt, the most athletic bottoms they can find, and some discarded shoes. This is commonly known as “gym attire,” but what you wear to work out is more important than you know. Depending on the type of training you’re anticipating, you may have to deviate from your typical gym getup; this is especially true for EPIC Interval Training programs.

Our workouts are like nothing you’ve ever experienced, which is why it’s essential that you prepare yourself to make the most of this unique opportunity. Adequate hydration, proper stretching, and nutrition are a few ways to do just that, but be sure not to counteract those efforts by being improperly dressed. Allow these workout attire tips to guide you as you prepare for an EPIC workout!

COMFORTABLE CLOTHING

It’s essential that you dress comfortably for your workout. This does not mean that you come in pajama pants and an oversized shirt, but rather in clothing that allows you to perform the necessary movements with ease. Overly baggy clothing requires frequent readjustments and can interfere with your workout, but we don’t suggest excessively tight garments, either. They can limit your range of motion and restrict your breathing. Comfortable clothing for an EPIC workout is appropriately sized and composed of the proper materials.

SWEAT RESISTANT MATERIALS

Have you ever jumped into the pool with a 100% cotton t-shirt? Notice how heavy the material becomes when soaked? This is exactly what you’re doing when you wear cotton garments to a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) class. Between burpees, kettlebell swings, and numerous suspension training exercises, you can expect to work up an intense sweat. Do yourself a favor by wearing sweat-resistant materials. Such clothing wicks perspiration rather than absorbing it, keeping your clothing lightweight and conducive to your training efforts.

FLIP-FLOPS

Yes, flip-flops. We train completely barefoot, so one thing you do not have to worry about is choosing appropriate footwear. This tends to be the most significant issue for many fitness seekers as proper footwear differs for each activity, but we’ve found the efficacy of barefoot training to be self-evident. Overly-cushioned and padded footwear limits your workout more than it benefits it, as you are unable to train particular foot and lower leg muscles that are essential for balance, stability, and coordination. Join us for the most effective barefoot training you’ve ever experienced!

EPIC Interval Training offers HIIT classes in New York City that expose you to its many heralded benefits. Our unique training method is minimalistic and laser-focused on the use of body weight to achieve fitness goals. With the appropriate attire coupled with an open mind and a desire for growth, you’ll be well-equipped for an EPIC workout! Contact us today at 646-450-2405 to discover how you get your first class free!
