  • #IntervalTraining, Member of the Month, Member Spotlight, New York
Congratulations Katherine and Phil! Your hard work and commitment to EPIC have not gone unnoticed. Each month, we recognize a member for what they put in, and this month, you have both been chosen! We would like to brag about you guys in our newsletter and on social media so if you would please fill out the questions below that would help us to do so!

Your Name

PS + KM: Phil S. and Katie M.

I have been an EPIC Member Since

PS + KM: October 2015

EPIC Fun Fact

This can be anything about yourself or an EPIC memory from your time at the gym. Play any sports? Have any interesting hobbies. etc.

KM: I was a Division I collegiate swimmer, but never felt very confident with my “dryland” exercise ability until I came to EPIC

PS: I wasn’t a member of any gym until one of my dumb friends signed me up for a Tough Mudder charity run and I started doing EPIC to not finish last

My favorite EPIC class is

PS + KM: The Grynd

Give us a quick background on yourself.

PS + KM: We met in college and have been together 11 years, lived together in NYC for 10 and married for 2. We normally can be found partnering together – but occasionally fly solo when Phil travels for work or Katie needs a break from Phil. The couple that EPICs together, stays together?

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

KM: Being able to traverse all the way across the monkey bars and being able to Snatch – snatches were my nemesis for about 2 years.

PS: Remember the time I won half a member of the month award? More seriously…traversing bars, swinging on rings, climbing ropes, and doing all the fun things I couldn’t do at all when I first started.

What is your Instagram handle?

KM: @kates2117

PS: @psclafani45

HIIT: The Secret to Optimal Heart Health

HIIT: The Secret to Optimal Heart Health

  • #IntervalTraining, Fitness
The fitness benefits of HIIT or high-intensity interval training are well-known. Fitness seekers worldwide are aware that through HIIT, they can efficiently get in a total body workout in 45 minutes that targets more muscle groups than most people do in one week. They also know that through HIIT they can expect to improve coordination, balance, and endurance, but did you know that HIIT could improve your heart health?

HOW HIIT BENEFITS THE HEART

Are you someone who doesn’t get in as much exercise as you should? Not only can regular exercise help you burn calories and slim down, but it also protects the heart. As you work out regularly, you improve your cardiovascular fitness which, in turn, takes the pressure away from your heart muscles as they are able to pump oxygen-rich blood through your body with ease. Any form of exercise can benefit your heart, but there are some methods of fitness that are more efficient at it than others.

HIIT is especially effective at improving heart health for these key reasons:

  • HIIT places your heart in the maximum heart rate zone for short intervals. This zone is toward the upper limit of what your body can handle while performing physical activity.
  • Between the intervals of high-intensity, your heart rate reduces into the lower heart rate zone, which allows for you to recover momentarily
  • Returning to levels of high intensity challenges your heart muscles to work efficiently to pump blood and keep up with your level of training.
By doing this repeatedly throughout a single workout and over the course of multiple training sessions, you are ultimately training your cardiac muscles to pump blood as efficiently as possible.

WAYS TO PERFORM HIIT

Individuals who wish to expose themselves to the heralded benefits of HIIT often have trouble discovering ways to perform HIIT. As niche at it may sound, one can adapt HIIT to whatever physical activity they enjoy. The only rule to performing HIIT is that you keep the intensity high throughout the workout only to be interrupted by short rest/transition periods. One can adapt this fitness method to:
  • Running
  • Swimming
  • Biking
  • … and much more

EPIC Interval Training in New York City is home to some of the most efficient HIIT you’ve ever experienced. Our minimalistic-style of training allows us to leave our shoes at home and the bulky gym equipment elsewhere. Instead, we perform our workouts entirely barefoot with our bodyweight being the primary fitness tool. 5 THINGS NEW THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH A KETTLE BELL

5 THINGS NEW THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH A KETTLE BELL

Kettle bells are my favorite toy! They are the most versatile training tools in the shed by my standards. Over the years I have done tons of research and self-experimentation to get more connected with my beloved kettle bells, below is a list of some obscure ways that you can enjoy your kettle bells going into the new year.
  • Kettle bell juggling- this is a pretty extreme sport that takes a lot of courage and conditioning to be a part of. It originated from strongmen and circus acts to display an ultimate level of strength and skill, it truly demands both. An easy way to get started is by practicing a Russian swing and adding a bell flip at the top. This is simpler then it seems but beware of your toes in the learning stages. Google kettle bell juggling when you get a chance, it is an amazing site.
  • Kettle bell meditation- this is something that I created on my own, it might sound weird but it’s totally awesome when you get into it. Pick a few positions that you like to meditate in and find a creative way to hold a kettle bell while doing it. This will definitely test your strength, however the real test is trying to ignore the bell while focusing on your breathing. I love both kettle bells and meditation so it’s a match made in heaven. My favorite entry level is the goblet squat position, hold the bell while driving your elbows into you the inside of your legs to create an open stretch. Continue to focus on the breathing, lengthening your spine and avoid shifting around. Good luck
  • Kettle bell balance- balance is the most neglected aspect of training across the board. I can’t remember the last time I walked into a fitness class where I actually had to focus on balancing myself to complete the class, sounds silly but the world is a balancing act every which way you look at it (especially if you’re wearing high heels.) By using the handle or the flat side of a kettle bell you can create a very narrow ledge to practice balance-based movements. Some of my favorites are single leg dead lifts or single leg kettle bell rows. The more advanced movements are pistol squats or explosive lunges. It’s good to test your fitness to the next level by using simple things like balance, it will have a very rewarding outcome on the field if given enough time to grow.
  • Kettle bell mashing- I’m sure you all have heard of foam rolling, think of foam rolling with a kettle bell. The kettle bell is combination of a torture devise and an extremely hardened foam roller. My favorite ways to use this method is by placing my calves onto of the handle and slowing rolling out the sides or lower portion of my Achilles tendon. It is brutal way to get the job done!

Why Do We Exercise Barefoot?

December 18, 2017 //  by epicfresno

Why Do We Exercise Barefoot?

  • epicfresno
  • December 18, 2017

  • #IntervalTraining

If you were to ask someone if they would ever train barefoot, they would likely look at you as if you were half mad. The only time people deem barefoot training appropriate is when at the beach or performing yoga. Other than that, it seems like some sort of archaic training method, and although true, not all new things are necessarily better. Join us as we delve into the benefits of barefoot training and how exercising in shoes is not as efficient as you may believe.

DRAWBACKS OF TRAINING IN SHOES

Training barefoot was once the ideal way of maximizing results. The trend shifted when shoe companies began switching their focus from constructing minimalist-style footwear to shoes intended to provide ultimate cushioning and comfort. Although the footwear assisted in making activities such as running and traditional gym training more comfortable, it presented more drawbacks than many noticed. Training in shoes:

  • Limits your ability to strengthen leg and foot muscles.
  • Is counterproductive for those who wish to improve stability and balance.
  • Contributes to foot and ankle dysfunction.
  • Inhibits hip and lower torso mechanics.

The disadvantage of training in shoes is much more than having weak ankles or instability. Foot and ankle stability is integral to perform many exercises and can be the reason behind your inability to do them correctly or without discomfort. By strengthening your body from the ground up, you build a foundation that is conducive to efficient training.

BAREFOOT TRAINING EXPLAINED

After adequate preparation, working out barefoot can increase overall strength, promote proper firing patterns and foot mechanics. Many people fail to realize that roughly 20% of the muscles in the body are in their feet and ankles. This is so as they are meant to absorb an excessively high amount of force.

By training barefoot, we allow those muscles to strengthen and improve our ability to perform many compound exercises like:

  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Jump squats
  • Box jumps
  • Step-ups

You’ll quickly realize after regularly training barefoot that your ability to perform many movements with shoes has improved. The reason being is that your tendons, ligaments, joints, and surrounding tissues are no longer responsible for absorbing massive amounts of force. Your body now trusts your feet and ankles more, allowing you to maximize output for all physical activities.

We understand that the fear of injury looms large in the minds of many barefoot training newcomers, which is why we design our fitness studios with your safety in mind. Our mats, walls, and plyo boxes are all made from soft materials to allow you to regain foot and ankle strength in the safest environment possible. Interested in being a part of an EPIC workout? 4 WAYS TO SURVIVE A DYNAMIC WORKOUT

4 WAYS TO SURVIVE A DYNAMIC WORKOUT

  • epicfresno
  • December 11, 2017

  • #IntervalTraining

Have you heard the news? EPIC Interval Training is regarded as one of the toughest variations of HIIT and for a good reason. Our workouts are designed to push your mental and physical limits to help you develop the physique you’ve dreamed of, but getting there is no walk in the park. For those contemplating trying this unique method of fitness for the first time, you may be wondering how in the world you can prepare for such a grueling experience. Here are four ways to help you survive the toughest workout of your life.

HYDRATE YOUR BODY

It’s essential to hydrate your body in the days prior to any workout, but the importance is magnified when the training in question can burn up to 1,200 calories in 45 minutes. With an immense level of energy exertion expected, you can best prepare yourself by drinking water daily leading up to the class. If you fail to do so, your body may become dehydrated quickly during the workout and lead to:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Increased heart rate
  • Limited sweat production
  • Excessive thirst
  • Muscle cramping

STRETCH

Another thing to do in preparation for your EPIC workout is to stretch. Doing so helps loosen the muscles and adequately preps for the wide variations of movements you’ll perform during the session. Our circuit style training is designed to work every muscle for a highly efficient full-body workout. You can expect to do everything from incline push-ups and kettlebell swings to box jumps and sandbag squats. By hydrating and loosening your muscles, you can avoid injury and get the most from your workout. Just be sure to stretch after warming up for the best results as the increased blood flow improves flexibility.

TRY YOUR HARDEST

The toughest battle you’ll fight prior to the training will not be physical, but moreso mental. Many people begin to psych themselves out of being able to do it before even walking through the gym doors. If you go in believing that you can’t do it, then you most likely won’t. Get in the proper mindset by encouraging yourself to perform every movement to the best of your ability, and you’ll likely gain a more beneficial training experience.

SEE IT THROUGH

Don’t give up! Again, your mindset is crucial to the result of this class. You registered for the program because you heard about its many benefits and wanted to experience them first-hand. Now that you’ve made it past the tough part of deciding to enroll, make the most of it by seeing it through to the end. The best thing about HIIT is that your body gradually adapts to the training. Commit to the training, and you’ll see the results.

EPIC Interval Training is here to bring the fun back into fitness by implementing different workouts every day of the week. Through the combination of HIIT and minimalistic training, our circuit-style classes can help you develop strength, endurance, power, agility, and balance in just 45 minutes a day! Contact us today to sign up for an EPIC workout in New York City!

Best Workout Attire for an EPIC Workout

When preparing to go to the gym, many people just throw on an old t-shirt, the most athletic bottoms they can find, and some discarded shoes. This is commonly known as “gym attire,” but what you wear to work out is more important than you know. Depending on the type of training you’re anticipating, you may have to deviate from your typical gym getup; this is especially true for EPIC Interval Training programs.

Our workouts are like nothing you’ve ever experienced, which is why it’s essential that you prepare yourself to make the most of this unique opportunity. Adequate hydration, proper stretching, and nutrition are a few ways to do just that, but be sure not to counteract those efforts by being improperly dressed. Allow these workout attire tips to guide you as you prepare for an EPIC workout!

COMFORTABLE CLOTHING

It’s essential that you dress comfortably for your workout. This does not mean that you come in pajama pants and an oversized shirt, but rather in clothing that allows you to perform the necessary movements with ease. Overly baggy clothing requires frequent readjustments and can interfere with your workout, but we don’t suggest excessively tight garments, either. They can limit your range of motion and restrict your breathing. Comfortable clothing for an EPIC workout is appropriately sized and composed of the proper materials.

SWEAT RESISTANT MATERIALS

Have you ever jumped into the pool with a 100% cotton t-shirt? Notice how heavy the material becomes when soaked? This is exactly what you’re doing when you wear cotton garments to a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) class. Between burpees, kettlebell swings, and numerous suspension training exercises, you can expect to work up an intense sweat. Do yourself a favor by wearing sweat-resistant materials. Such clothing wicks perspiration rather than absorbing it, keeping your clothing lightweight and conducive to your training efforts.

FLIP-FLOPS

Yes, flip-flops. We train completely barefoot, so one thing you do not have to worry about is choosing appropriate footwear. This tends to be the most significant issue for many fitness seekers as proper footwear differs for each activity, but we’ve found the efficacy of barefoot training to be self-evident. Overly-cushioned and padded footwear limits your workout more than it benefits it, as you are unable to train particular foot and lower leg muscles that are essential for balance, stability, and coordination. Join us for the most effective barefoot training you’ve ever experienced!

EPIC Interval Training offers HIIT classes in New York City that expose you to its many heralded benefits. Our unique training method is minimalistic and laser-focused on the use of body weight to achieve fitness goals. With the appropriate attire coupled with an open mind and a desire for growth, you’ll be well-equipped for an EPIC workout! Contact us today at 646-450-2405 to discover how you get your first class free!

Box step ups using a wreck bag.
Wreck bags are a must in obstacle course training but they are also a great for anyone who wants a challenging total body workout and take their strength training to a new level. Using the wreck bag is a convenient and efficient way to optimize your workout. The handles on the front allow you to gain a good grip on the bag so you have control over it and don’t need to pause your workout to reposition. I recommend the Wreck bag for anyone looking to change up their workout routine in a safe and comfortable way.

  • #IntervalTraining, Member of the Month, Member Spotlight, New York
Congratulations! Your hard work and commitment to EPIC has not gone unnoticed. Each month, we recognize a member for what they put in, and this month, you have been chosen! We would like to brag about you in our newsletter and on social media so if you would please fill out the questions below that would help us to do so!

Your Name

Becky S.

I have been an EPIC Member Since

January 2016

EPIC Fun Fact

This can be anything about yourself or an EPIC memory from your time at the gym. Play any sports? Have any interesting hobbies. etc. I was a competitive gymnast and competed in synchronized ice skating on Team USA

My favorite EPIC class is

The Blast

Give us a quick background on yourself.

I grew up in Katonah, NY, but was born in England! I have a wonderful fiancé, and I’m a certified athletic trainer currently in graduate school for a master’s in exercise science specializing in sports performance and nutrition. I’m also a paramedic and was assistant chief of my collegiate emergency medical services in undergrad. I love Coach’s Workouts, even when Jesse puts 250 burpees in them!

What has been your biggest accomplishment since joining EPIC?

You mean besides winning Member of the Month?! Definitely learning to do strict pull-ups, now that I know to engage my lats and upper back (thanks, Caitlin!).

What is your Instagram handle?
