EPIC Fun Fact

My Uncle Peter peer-pressured me at the Christmas dinner table to join Epic’s New Year’s challenge without ever have taken a class. I showed up for my 1st class, completed the challenge and haven’t looked back! Thanks Uncle Pete!

Give us a quick background on yourself.

I live on the Upper East Side and work in Midtown at a law firm as the Recruiting Manager. I ran the Chicago marathon last year, love spending weekends at the beach and am the proud Aunt of 3 nephews and 2 nieces.

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

I have had so many…adding weight to my Turkish get-up, finally jumping over the box, and holding crow pose. I am still working on my traverse…!

What is your favorite EPIC Class?

The Grynd

EPIC Fun Fact

Hmmmm well, my iPod is mostly full of 90’s music, I have an extreme weakness for all baked goods, my favorite meal after a race is a big fat juicy cheeseburger, my DVR is always above 80% full because I’m a TV junkie, I travel at least once a month out of state and I have a cat named Crazy.

Give us a quick background on yourself.

I grew up in South Florida as the youngest of 7, was always over weight, and was never athletic in my life. Sure, I was a tom boy so I flew remote control airplanes, and ran around the neighborhood playing football and scraping up my knees, but no one would ever think of me as athletic. I went to college for acting where I learned how to take a fall, and where they tried to teach me how to do a headstand. Tried being the important word there. I moved to NY in 1999, and other than walking more than I ever thought humanly possible, and a random gym stint here or there to attempt to loose weight, my active life was non existent. In 2004 I was in a car accident that messed up my back pretty bad, and stopped me from being able to lift anything anymore…..or so I thought.
In late 2012 I decided to change my life and to have a healthier and more active lifestyle. I found EPIC through a Groupon deal, and I haven’t looked back since. My life is totally different now, and my back is stronger than ever. People actually consider me athletic because of the muscles I’ve built and the races I finish. It’s amazing to me what a difference a couple of years, some amazing coaches, and a new outlook on life will do for a girl.

Have you done any OCRs? If so, which?

In 2014 my very first OCR was a 5K Foam Fest in Tuxedo. I followed that race with my very first Spartan Sprint in Tuxedo, which somehow I finished. Then I did a Warrior Dash in NJ, followed by a few other local OCR fun races through out 2014. This year I have done a few of the fun OCR races, but I’ve also done the Beast in NJ, the Super in PA, Citifield Sprint, Tuxedo Sprint, the Super in NJ, and in Oct I will do the Beast in Dallas which will earn me my double Trifecta. Now I’m even thinking of doing Fenway for fun. For FUN!!! I never thought I would think of a Spartan race as fun, and now I can’t get enough of them.

Toughest Obstacle

Monkey bars and rope climb

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

Being able to do anything I couldn’t do before EPIC is an accomplishment in my book, and I celebrate each accomplishment as they occur. When I first started at EPIC I could barely hang from a bar or hold myself up on the power wheel. The first time I traversed the monkey bars, or jumped onto the bigger box, or traversed the rings, or most recently did a handstand, I jumped up and down, with my fists pumping in the air. Anyone who has ever been in class with me when I’ve accomplished something new, knows I am not joking when i say I jump around celebrating. I will always celebrate each accomplishment because each one is something I never thought I would ever be able to do in my life.

I have also lost 50+ pounds since joining EPIC!

What's next on your list of goals that EPIC can help you achieve?

I want to climb that dang rope all the way to the top. I’m getting the hang of it, but I haven’t touched the bar yet. I also want to be able to traverse the ropes, do a run class without wanting to die, jump on even bigger boxes, do a muscle up on the bar, and become more confident in my handstands. I’m sure there will always be new goals for me as I accomplish others, but that’s just one more reason I love EPIC.

What would you tell other members of EPIC? What about those thinking of trying or not yet at EPIC?

For my fellow EPIC members – thank you. Thank you for the encouragement, the laughs, the strength you’ve all helped me achieve, and the support. All of you make my workouts so much better because I know we are all in it together.
For my coaches, and coach apprentices – a huge HUGE thank you. All of you push me to be better than I was the day before, and you make sure I don’t do something stupid and hurt myself.
For those thinking of trying EPIC, you should. You will be amazed what you are capable of. When I first started, I would take 1 class a week, and would then be sore until the next week. Now, twice a week I take 2 classes back to back as a minimum, and I can actually walk around like a normal not dying of soreness human being. I’ve said this before in an interview about EPIC, and I’ll always say it – It gets easier, but it’s never easy!

What is your favorite EPIC Class?

 The Blast (It’s a love/hate thing)

Give us a quick background on yourself.

I was always somewhat active when I was in school, but mostly in a very casual way. After graduating I found that I still wanted to be active but I wanted the activity to be more serious and structured. I wanted fitness to become a much bigger part of my life. So when my boss ‘encouraged’ us to join him at the 2014 Tuxedo Spartan Sprint, I took it as an opportunity to jump start my fitness. After I agreed I realized I desperately ] needed to prepare for the impending race. I happened to see EPIC’s sign while eating lunch across the street. I couldn’t believe the coincidence. Later that week I took my first class and I have been hooked ever since.

Have you done any OCRs? If so, which?

The 2014 Tuxedo Spartan Sprint

Toughest Obstacle

Since I only prepared for about a month before this race, every obstacle was hard. I really want to do a race this year to see just how far I have come.

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

There isn’t one move that I can pick for this, really I think my biggest accomplishment is how much my all around strength has increased since starting Epic. I notice it all of the time in day to day life and my other fitness activities.

What's next on your list of goals that EPIC can help you achieve?

Anyone who has worked out with me in the past couple months could probably answer this. Next I am absolutely determined to get a strict, unassisted pull-up.

What would you tell other members of EPIC? What about those thinking of trying or not yet at EPIC?

That there is no better workout out there. There might be a tougher one (I kind of doubt it) but you will never find a better combination of incredible coaching, supportive classmates, and hard work anywhere else.

May 2014

What is your favorite EPIC Class?

AMRAP

Give us a quick background on yourself.

I joined EPIC when I moved to Midtown East last year and was quickly hooked on the program. The variety of workouts, group atmosphere and consistent challenge keep me coming back daily.

Have you done any OCRs? If so, which?

I competed in my first two races, the Spartan NJ Beast and the Spartan Tuxedo Sprint this year. I am looking to do a few more throughout the summer.

Toughest Obstacle

Z-Wall Traverse

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

It’s hard to pinpoint specific accomplishments but I can say my overall fitness level has improved exponentially.  EPIC keeps me accountable to show up and work hard every day.

What's next on your list of goals that EPIC can help you achieve?

My goal is continue to push my endurance and conditioning training to improve my race results and to clean up my diet.

What would you tell other members of EPIC? What about those thinking of trying or not yet at EPIC?

The coaches and members make working out at EPIC fun. EPIC is functional fitness and high intensity training at its best. It’s opened up my eyes to new workouts, challenges and races and is something I look forward to each day.

What is your favorite EPIC Class?

The Blast

EPIC Fun Facts

Karen is a trekkie. HUGE Stark Trek fan...Live

Give us a quick background on yourself.

I thought I was athletic enough until I took my first class at Epic in May 2013 and got my ass kicked by Alex’s class and realized that I wasn’t as fit as I thought I was.  But it only took that one class for me to get hooked to the type of training Epic provides, which I had not found anywhere else, and it was the beginning of a physical and mental transformation for me from partying hard to training hard.
After my first Spartan Race at Tuxedo in 2013 I knew that I wanted in on the OCR action and Epic has helped me with accomplishing more than I thought I could ever do physically.  I’ve also made some amazing and incredible friends through the Epic community and I could not ask for better partners in adventure to share great experiences with outside of the gym!

Have you done any OCRs? If so, which?

Since joining Epic the OCR races I’ve done include Spartan Races and Battlefrog.  It was because of Epic that I felt “positive peer pressure” into completing a Spartan Race Trifecta in a weekend in Hawaii, something I thought was out of reach for me but Epic helped make it a reality, along with now competing in the Elite heat at Spartan Races, too.

Toughest Obstacle

Toughest obstacle for me remains the spear throw–I haven’t hit one ever!! That’s where I try to do burpees the fastest.

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

It’s hard to identify my biggest accomplishment at Epic because I feel there are so many milestones I’ve hit along the way, but a couple of feats of strength that I surprised myself with while at the gym are being able to do kip-up headstand to handstands and the peg wall.

What's next on your list of goals that EPIC can help you achieve?

Next goals that Epic will help me get to are hopefully to be able to do a strict muscle-up and to finally hit a spear throw in a race!

What would you tell other members of EPIC? What about those thinking of trying or not yet at EPIC?

For my fellow Epic members I’d like to tell them thank you for always motivating me and pushing me to new heights.  The friendships I’ve made through Epic are truly priceless and I wouldn’t give anything up for them.  Epic has helped change my lifestyle for the better and I could not be happier for it.  For people who are thinking about trying Epic I’d tell them to just try it and have fun because it’s one step in the right direction.

Give us a quick background on yourself.

As a college athlete on the rowing team, I was eager to find something with similar camaraderie that would keep me fit and push my limits. I was happy to hear about EPIC through a friend, and immediately got hooked once I started taking classes. I admired members who would proudly come daily, and have the muscles to show for it. Before I knew it, I was coming every day myself, craving more and more of a challenge and visibly getting stronger. It’s exciting coming to class and working hard alongside my new EPIC buddies. All my friends and family know it – I can’t get enough of EPIC!

Have you done any OCRs? If so, which?

Yes! I have completed the Spartan Super in NJ last year as well as the Spartan Beast in NJ this year, with a few others upcoming for 2015!

Toughest Obstacle

The Rope Climb

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

Conquering the monkey bars!

What's next on your list of goals that EPIC can help you achieve?

Looking forward to mastering the traverse wall and rope climb, as well as up my overall speed-work training.

What would you tell other members of EPIC? What about those thinking of trying or not yet at EPIC?

EPIC coaches are unparalleled in expertise, athleticism and inspiration. I’ve learned so much from each Alex, Brendan, Julia, Sam, Leanne, Alyssa and Teddy. They’ve been extremely motivational individuals to aspire to, and I’m so thankful and appreciative for all their dedication. For new members thinking about joining EPIC, I can say this….DON’T BE AFRAID!
One of my favorite sports quotes came from Derek Jeter – he said, “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.” To me, this is what EPIC is all about. You leave nothing on the mat and give it YOUR all every class. Everything else will fall into place. I’m so happy to be a part of EPIC and look forward to meeting new members, completing more races and getting faster!

Spartan Training Runs

Give us a quick background on yourself.

When I moved to NYC, I ended up living across the street from EPIC on 53rd. It took me a while to realize that I needed to renew my focus on fitness, but over a year later I finally signed up for my first class. My only regret is that I didn’t try it sooner. I’ve never had as much fun working out, and it didn’t take long before I was attending class as often as possible.

Have you done any OCRs? If so, which?

I ran my first two OCRs last year, the Citi Field Sprint and the Washington DC Sprint

Toughest Obstacle

Spear throw

What has been your biggest accomplished since joining EPIC?

Before I joined EPIC I had been running consistently, but I’d neglected my core and upper body for years. Progress has required patience, but I would point to my improving handstands as evidence of my gains in those areas. Coincidentally, my running has also benefited, and I’m proud to say I just set a new personal record for the half marathon a few weeks ago.

What’s next on your list of goals that EPIC can help you achieve?

The list is long, but unweighted rollbacks are priority one. I’m also signed up for the NJ Beast and Citi Field Spartan Races, and after my first taste last year I’m looking forward to approaching these with a more aggressive racing mindset. Beyond those, I’m sure EPIC will continue to push me towards new goals that I haven’t even considered yet.

What would you tell other members of EPIC? What about those thinking of trying or not yet at EPIC?

To EPIC coaches and members, I would like to say thank you for inspiring and pushing me every day. This place is full of amazing role models. You’ve helped me to raise my expectations for myself, both in and out of the gym.
To people who would like to try EPIC, I would say go for it sooner rather than later. I’d also challenge you to find better coaches anywhere else. In addition to being the best at what they do, EPIC coaches are exceptional teachers that will genuinely care and invest themselves in your progress. Lastly, when you sign up for a class I’d recommend showing up on time, properly hydrated, well rested, and ready to have fun.
